Viva Carthago - Les Naufragés de Carthage
These past days I've been seeing a lot of advertising for an animated movie called "Viva Carthago - Les Naufragés de Carthage" (Viva Carthago - The Shipwrecked Men of Carthage) which will be released on September 18th.
The animated feature begins in 146 BC when the city of Carthage is destroyed by Roman legionnaires. Ten-year-old Sedik and his co-adventurers escape, boarding a ship they call Carthago, and embark on a magical journey through Mediterranean antiquity.
The movie takes a more or less educative approach to telling the history of the Mediterranean region through the adventures of Sedik and his four friends.
The movie is a 75-minute French-language Tunisian animation, directed by Abdel Belhadi, Henri Heidsieck and Enrico Carseli; and is co-produced by Cinétéléfilms (Tunisia), L’autre rive productions (France) under the Euromediatoon project, financed by the European Commission (Euromed Audiovisual programme), the Tunisian Ministry of Culture, E.R.T.T., A.I.F./CIRTEFF, the departement of Charente X and the general council of Poitou-Charentes and the embassy of France in Tunisia through its cultural services.
The feature was shown in the Vues d'Afrique festival in Montreal, Canada; the Sousse International Film Festival for Children and Youth (FIFEJ ); and recently in the Festival of Carthage in Tunisia.
Apparently a new cartoon TV series will also follow, to be aired in Arabic on Tunisia's TV7 and other channels and in French mainly in France.
From the bits and pieces I've seen here and there, this is looking really good animation-wise, and I can't wait to see the whole thing. I hope more and more of these projects start coming to life.
I've already seen some bits of another cool new Tunisian cartoon series which should be finished and aired soon, but I can't give any more details for the time being because its still under lock and key.
I'll let you know more once I'm given the green light to talk about it.
