Memoirs of a Geisha – Arthur Golden

Memoirs of a Geisha” is one of the books I’ve been wanting to read for a very long time, and the fact that a movie based on the novel is out, only made me want to do it faster, because seeing the movie before reading the book would kind of put me off reading it for a while.

Last night, I finished reading the novel, and well, I just loved it. It’s written in such a great style, and takes you through this amazing journey, which is the life of the Geisha Sayuri Nitta.

The book totally sucks you in and makes it so hard to put it down. You basically live through the story, through the flood of emotions and experiences, you visit this fascinating and exotic world, and you draw all these characters and places in your imagination so clearly.

This is certainly one of the best books I’ve read and I fully recommend it to everyone.

My score for it would be: 9.5/10

I can’t wait to see the movie. I saw the trailer yesterday and it looked really cool.

  1. Hi Marwane,
I think I will act on your recommendation and buy a copy of the book. I haven’t read any novel in a long time, and was looking for one which would be a great read like this one sounds to me. So… here we go ๐Ÿ™‚

  2. Karim, I hope you like it ๐Ÿ™‚
    I personally readlly enjoyed it.
I’m now reading “The Alchemist” by Paolo Coelho, which is an amazing book too.

  3. I finally read the book, which I heard of around 5 or 6 years ago when Madonna got fascinated by it and adopted the Geisha look during her Ray of Light period with Nothing Really Matters video.

She said back then in an interview that she wished to be part of it if it ever gets to the big screen, and I think she would have played Hatsumomo’s role.

After hearing that the book has finally made it to the screen I was encouraged to read it, and I must say, this book has been the fastest read in my life! It took me a week to finish it and I even broke my record and finished 140 pages in one take!

I managed to finish it just minutes before the screening of the movie, I was very determined to finish the book first, which I was glad to, and saw the movie with a totally different experience! It was weird because I actually didn’t see the movie but was flipping thru the pages and chapters in my head while watching it.

Knowing how books turn into movies -with the exception of LOTR- the story goes by so quickly and skips many events, I felt I was moving fast forward and didn’t enjoy the movie as the ones who didn’t read the book! Or maybe those who read the book some time ago..

My favourite adaptation from the book was Mameha’s role. I think she was the closest to what I had in mind and she did extraordinary acting.

  4. Memoirs of a Geisha made me obsessed with Sayuri and her story. It made me feel as if she was sitting next to me and pouring her emotions and stories into my heart. It made me never want to put the book down, and when it ended I kept wanting to read more and more. A true love, suspence, and emotional novel. A definate 10 out of 10!

  5. yesterday i feneched reading the novel, and its super great, the way Arthur Golden writes is very great…i just loved it…I never been to Japan but I just love this country, best book i’ve ever read…
