The Tenth Planet
So it has been confirmed that our Solar system has a 10th planet which is larger than Pluto and nearly three times farther from the Sun as Pluto is.
The new planet, temporarily designated 2003 UB313, is the most distant object yet seen in the solar system, 97 times farther from the Sun than the Earth is. It also is the largest body yet found orbiting in the Kuiper belt, the group of icy bodies including Pluto which orbit beyond Neptune.
Like Pluto, it is covered by methane ice, and at its present distance is chilled to just 30°C above absolute zero, says Mike Brown, the Caltech astronomer who announced its discovery.
An official name hasn't been chosen for it yet, but NewScientist has collected suggestions from its readers, and the top 10 suggestions were:
Persephone, Peace, Galileo, Xena, Rupert, Bob, Titan, Nibiru, Cerberus and Loki.
If I had to choose one of those, I'd definitely go for Persephone, not because of the meaning or idea behind it, which is based on Roman mythology, but rather because it reminds me of Persephone from the movie "The Matrix", thus the one and only Monica Bellucci :P
It's a shame that name is taken though. It was used back in 1895 as a name for the 399th known asteroid.
