VW Polo Suicide Bomber Ad
Nurhan just sent me a link to this extremely disturbing VW Polo Ad.
The ad features a Palestinian suicide bomber, wearing a kafiyyeh scarf, who gets into a Polo, drives to a café full of smiling peaceful people (babies included) and then blows himself up in the car, but as the car is strong and tough, the explosion is contained inside the car and nothing happens to the people outside.
And then the slogan appears: "Polo. Small But Tough."
I think doing something like this is totally racist, wrong and immoral.
I couldn't believe that a global company like VW would release an ad like this one, so I went on searching for the truth behind it all.
It turns out the ad is a fake and that the car giant decided to go ahead and sue the people behind the advert on the grounds that it was damaging its reputation around the world and falsely linked the VW with terrorism.
The ad was directed by a certain Stuart Fryer, who says he had only ever meant it to be used on a showreel and never seen by the public.
Anyway, even if this guy really only meant it to be for private showing to advertising companies, I think it's totally wrong and that he should be held accountable for it.
Racist behaviours and actions like this should not be tolerated.
I agree with you on that MMM. Such action is so irresponsible and racist.
Posted by: Eman-Aqua at March 7, 2005 03:50 PMI think there are three issues here. Firstly, trademark. He obviously can't use someone elses trademark without their approval, period.
Bad sense of humour; (but truely define one sense of perfectly good humour? I am sure that would be quite funny in itself!). I see merely just an expression, a parody of viral advertising itself, a freedom of expression. Which by todays standards, isn't even all that graphic.
Which leads to the last point, regulation, do we (ie. person with a brain) really need a government or policeman to tell us what we can be exposed to -- Its rather like been told to think within [this box only], and not look outside it, for whatever reason including art.
Having said that, the guy need to get a more compassionate sense of humour, and try using a fictitious trademark for his viral advertising parodies.
Posted by: Jeff Knight at March 7, 2005 04:40 PMMmm I have to disagree.
It is nothing other than you see in the news everyday, and in regards to the trademark, surely it creates a good image. "Polo Saves The Day" ?
Or are VW like many of those other people out there, more concerned with the life of the terroist than those of the innocent lives that might be lost.
Posted by: Gav at April 26, 2005 11:22 PMGav, I totally disagree with you.
An ad like this one, if it was true, would be branding the whole Palestinian people as terrorists, which is racist and wrong!
If it were to reflect the reality in the news as you say it does, then it should show the terrorism the Israeli state practices too.
Everyone is concerned with the innocent lives, but those lives include Palestinians too, not just Israelis.
Posted by: MMM at April 27, 2005 08:45 AMwhat a bullshit comments!
the add was extremely funny! Best way to deal with extremist's and violence is with a load of humor!
Life is deadly by itself.....and the chances of getting killed by a terrorist attack in europe or the states are just above 0 %. So get your fear under control and laugh! cya!
Racist? It was a bad attempt at humor and most people would not know the particular terrorist affiliation or nationality of the terrorist based on the scarf, as far as they are concerned the terrorist could be any nationality. I agree poor taste and bad judgment but you can’t surrender free speech because you don’t like what someone says. Loosen up, pay the guy no attention, chalk it up to him being an idiot but don’t be so quick to play the racist card. For all any viewer knew the person who directed it could have been Palestinian.
Posted by: WRMII at July 26, 2006 11:47 AMHow do you know he was Palestinian? You got a certain disposition to think that anyone that wears a kafiyyeh scarf is Palestinian? This sort of thinking is racist in itself. Most humour involves shaming a group or person people can identify with. You can't have Big Bird playing the suicide bomber can you? Even then, certain groups (say IRA, Basque separatists, al-Qa'ida, Hizballah, Jemaah Islamiah etc...) will think that if Big Bird were going to blow him/herself up, then surely the joke was on them? Perhaps you wish to get rid of the concept of humour entirely because it is inheritantly evil?
I find cracking a joke about a suicide bomber (regardless of his/her affiliation/nationality/how he/she/it looks) to be funny.
I find America's invasion/occupation for dubious reason (which has only given cause to a lot of desperate people to do desperate things) to NOT BE FUNNY and so should you.
