  1. well lets look at this plainly and honestly. 1. This young boy years ago would not have been even allowed to display this sign. He now has the freedom to do so.Thats a powerful point.
    2. The last thing we want is another Saudi type muslim fanatic country that will deprive its people and children of basic human rights. While they have the freedom to choose their destiny, we need to ensure the extreme minority who may sway power and muscle to achieve the “democratic” Iraq don’t sweep up the people to do something which later they can’t control, that being another police state.

    But thats only my opinion

  2. Hi Joe,

It is true that this boy would have never been able to hold a sign like this up under Saddam’s rule. So yes, there is a certain degree of freedom of speech that the Iraqis have gained.

And I understand what you mean.
But still it’s up to Iraqis to decide and choose how their country turns out, and up to them to correct their mistakes if they make any.

A controlled democracy where they have to follow what the US sees as good is not really a democracy.

Just like the people of the USA were free to make a mistake in 2000 & 2004 to vote Bush president, Iraqis should be free to do what they want with their country too.

Freedom is not only the freedom to take their own right decisions but also the freedom to make their own mistakes.

And finally, we all know the US is not driven by it’s need to spread democracy in the world, it’s driven by it’s gains and greed.
Many a dictator in this world and many a cruel regime are ones that are supported by the US simply because they follow their orders.

  3. The young boy may even not understand what stands on the sign he holds, but that’s not the point. People have been euphoric just because the Iraqis could vote. I don’t think, that these elections will help the Iraqi people to get a better life. The results won’t please the occident too, cause the government that will come out is one that resembles to to one in Iran. Many people voted just to get the US out of Iraq. They will be disappointed. I even fear, that the next step in Iraq will be a civil war. What is freedom worth, if you have no security and no working infrastructure?

  4. Dear MMM

This is what I love about you man. You are very logical and understanding of others opinions. You don’t seem to be blinded by emotion and stubbornness. Your logic is sound, and although in reality “soly” will probably be right and we will find an Iran style gov’t ,its their decision to make.
What is very sad however is that the innocent, as usual, who will have their rights trampled upon. And we will most likely go thru a civil war like “soly” points out , before there is any sense of the true democracy.
I agree with you the USA has hidden agendas but my thinking is ,”force” a democracy on Iraq, and they will thank you for it later. We are talking about a people who have forgot what it means to have a voice , its these type of people that need a guiding hand to a place they have never seen: democracy.
But I take your point, we don’t want the blind leading the blind.
Mate, thats why I always come back to your site , you are very open minded.
    Keep up the great work
    Joe

  5. I agree with you soly that the next Iraqi government might just end up looking like the one in Iran, and we all know that this isn’t what the US wants.

Of course, some Iraqis don’t want a government like that either. But still, a lot of Iraqis do.
And in this system of votes, the majority chooses for all. Whether that’s fair or not, that’s the system.

The possibility of a civil war does exist and with the country being on the edge, it’s even more probable, which adds to the sensitivity of the situation.

I understand your point of view Joe, and let’s say that the US truly wants what’s best for the Iraqi people, wouldn’t it be better if the people weren’t forced into it? And if they were just peacefully helped into it.

Pushing something down somebody’s throat by force never helps, it leaves them with a soar throat, a gag reflex and an upset stomach.

As soly mentioned, some people don’t even care about who’s going to govern, all they care about is getting the US out of their country and that’s what they voted for.
So the existence of US forces is not as much a helping factor as it is an obstacle.

I think the best thing to do is to get the US forces out as soon as possible and have the United Nations take over assisting Iraq into rebuilding their country and creating their own flavour of democracy.

And Joe, thanks for the kind words, I’m flattered 🙂
It’s great having you here and hearing your opinion on things. You’re a very open minded person too.

Soly, thanks for dropping by too. I truly enjoy hearing from you and reading your thoughts 🙂
