Jill Sobule Tries To Make Fan Funded Album

American singer-songwriter Jill Sobule is another artist attempting to break away from the recording industry machine; her approach is by turning to her fans to fund her next album. She has launched a website called Jill's Next Record through which she's collecting donations from her fans in an attempt to come up with $75,000 for recording the album and other related costs. In return for her fan's donations, she will be giving them prizes according to the size of the donation. Donations can go from $25 up to $10,000; while her prizes go from sending out an advanced copy of...

More To Join The Music Revolution

More of the music industry’s biggest names are considering offering their music free online following the success of the experiment by Radiohead to let fans download their new album without charge. (Radiohead's website topped the chart of music websites with an 11-fold increase in internet hits after the announcement.) Now Jamiroquai and Oasis, two major names that are not contracted to record labels, are rumoured to be considering following Radiohead by offering work for free. The Charlatans are also offering fans their next album completely for free if they visit the site of radio station XFM. Meanwhile rumours abound that...

Bora Yoon Plays Music Using Mobile Phones

So, what do you know, mobile phones can serve to produce music that isn't always as annoying as ringtones... "A cell phone is as good an instrument as a piano," says Bora Yoon, a 27-year-old Korean-American who is becoming famous for playing the portable phone as a musical instrument. On Friday Yoon performed at the Time Warner Center's Jazz at Lincoln Center in Manhattan, the dream stage for aspiring jazz artists. The performance sponsored by Samsung Electronics proved that cell phones can indeed serve as high-tech instruments. Violinist and vocalist Yoon used the tones of the phone's keys, and combined...

My Top 10 Songs In May

The following is the list of the songs I listened to most this month, not necessarily ones that were released this month though: » Cupid's Chokehold - Gym Class Heroes This is the first song I've heard by the Gym Class Heroes, and I really like it, it's a cool song, fun and light. » All Good Things (Come To An End) - Nelly Furtado One of my favourite songs off Nelly Furtado's latest album "Loose"; A light ballady pop song with a catchy chorus. » Save Room - John Legend I really like John Legend's smooth R&B musical style;...

James Morrison - Undiscovered

One of the CDs I've been listening to a lot in the car recently is "Undiscovered" by English singer/songwriter James Morrison. I came to know James Morrison through his song "You Give Me Something" which is a really cool song, and then after hearing another of his songs called "Wonderful World", I just had to buy the album. I wasn't let down, the whole album is a magnificent ride through a set of great tunes and lyrics. James' style reminds me a lot of James Blunt and KT Tunstall with evident influences by greats like Cat Stevens, Otis Redding and...

Take That - Beautiful World

It might not be information that a lot of people know about me, or that a lot of people would be openly proud of, but I was actually a fan of Take That back in the 90's, in my teenage years; although when you come to think of it, I was more a fan of Gary Barlow than the whole band, because it was the songs he wrote and sang that I liked the most. Anyway, ten years after their split, Take That re-united last year and launched a number of reunion concerts in the UK that were very successful,...

Red Hot Chili Peppers - Stadium Arcadium

An album, actually double-album, I've been listening to a lot these past days is "Stadium Arcadium" by the Red Hot Chili Peppers; I'm a big fan of RHCP and their music, and this album just oozes more of their trademark cool tunes, rhymes and lyrics. Almost four years passed between the release of their last album "By The Way" and this one, and the band recorded enough songs for three albums over that period, which explains why they went ahead and released this two-hour, 28-track double-disc collection (Disc 1: Jupiter / Disc 2: Mars). The album is a mix between...

R.I.P James Brown

James Brown, the "Godfather of Soul", the legendary R&B artist, the singer and songwriter who defined funk and inspired rap, died yesterday at Atlanta's Emory Crawford Long Hospital of congestive heart failure at the age of 73. Brown's last words were to his manager Charles Bobbit, and they were: "I'm going away tonight." James Brown is one of the few music legends who will live on forever through their art and through the way they affected and revolutionized the music scene. His influence was broad and deep, and so much of the music we hear nowadays has it's roots...

An Other Cup - Yusuf Islam

Yesterday, while cruising through the music section at Géant, I came across Yusuf Islam's (Previously known as "Cat Stevens") comeback album "An Other Cup". I've been wanting to buy this album ever since I heard of its existence, and even more so after the reviews I read for it, so naturally I grabbed it right away. Before I get into what I think of this album, I'd like to proudly confess that I am a really big fan of Cat Stevens' music. I remember, as a kid in Zimbabwe, at "Alexandra Park School", we used to sing "Morning Has Broken"...

Paul Anka - Rock Swings

These past two days I've been listening to, and greatly enjoying I must add, Paul Anka's latest album "Rock Swings". I first heard some bits from it at a friend's place and was hooked immediately. On this album Paul Anka has taken a number of the most famous rock songs of these past years, re-arranged them using some cool swinging jazz beats, and the result is pure magic. Some of the hits he's covered and that I loved on this cd are: Smells Like Teen Spirit (Nirvana), Wonderwall (Oasis), Black Hole Sun (Soundgarden), It's My Life (Bon Jovi), Tears In...

These past days I've been listening to this album "One More Once" by Michel Camilo non stop in the car, it's just amazing. I got the cd a few days ago, after the guy I rent DVDs from gave me a taste of his music, and I was hooked right away. This album actually dates back to 1994, but has a fresh feeling to it that makes it as delightful to listen to now as I imagine it was back when it came out. Michel Camilo is a pianist and composer from Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. His music is...

Mariah Carey Live In Tunisia Soon

So, the news is that American music diva Mariah Carey will be coming to Tunisia this summer to perform at two concerts. The concerts will be held on July 22nd and 24th at the Menzah Stadium in Tunis. It's not very often that someone as famous as Mariah Carey comes to Tunisia for a concert. We've only had Michael Jackson once, Sting once and well I don't remember who else, if any. Still I'm not too sure I'll be going. I used to like some of Mariah's music in the early 90's, around the period of her hit album 'Music...

Shakira feat. Wyclef Jean: Hips Don't Lie

A very fun song I'm basically in love with these days is "Hips Don't Lie" by Shakira featuring Wyclef Jean, off her album Oral Fixation Vol. 2. It's only a slight remake of the original "Dance Like This" by Wyclef Jean featuring. Claudette Ortiz from the soundtrack of "Dirty Dancing - Havana Nights", which I really love too. In fact, that whole soundtrack is amazing. I think I must have listened to it thousands of time up to now. This remake just adds a layer of Shakira on top of it all, adding to it's coolness. The lyrics aren't much,...

Win Natacha Atlas' New Album 'Mish Maoul'

Belgian-born Middle Eastern singer Natacha Atlas has just released her latest album, by the title "Mish Maoul". The album is a blend of western beats and middle eastern forms and influences, mainly sung in Arabic and English. I was introduced to Natacha's music a few years ago, 1999 to be precise, with her hit song "Mon Amie La Rose", from her album "Gedida".
