Internet Outages Hit Middle East

Internet goes down, everything goes down... Life came to a standstill in Dubai, home of the renowned "Media City" and modern "electronic government," after an extensive Internet failure affected much of the United Arab Emirates... [...] Besides the Internet, the outage caused major disruption to television and phone services, creating chaos for the UAE's public and private sectors. [...] The outage heavily crippled Dubai's business section, which is heavily reliant on electronic means for billions of dollars' worth of transactions daily. [Source: CNN] And all around the Middle East and beyond as well: Internet services and usage have been disrupted...

Israeli Lobby Unwritten Contract With American Media

Andrea Levin, president of the Committee for Accuracy in Middle East Reporting in America (CAMERA) said in a speech: "The American media is much, much more geared to understanding that there is an unwritten contract between them and us..." What is this "unwritten contract"? I'll tell you what it is: it's an agreement to censor anything and everything that offends the Lobby and its glorified, sanitized view of Israel. Here, after all, is a country that practices apartheid, imprisons children, and was founded on ethnic cleansing and bigoted religious obscurantism – and yet they present themselves to the world...

Your Self-Esteem & People

Bionic Eyes: Contact Lenses With Circuits And Lights

Remember those bionic eyes some of our favorite sci-fi characters had to zoom in on far-away things, have useful facts pop into their field of view, or create virtual crosshairs? Well those could become an attainable reality for everyone soon enough. Engineers at the University of Washington have for the first time used manufacturing techniques at microscopic scales to combine a flexible, biologically safe contact lens with an imprinted electronic circuit and lights. Looking through a completed lens, you would see what the display is generating superimposed on the world outside; opening many doors for useful applications of these contact...

Tunisiana's GPS Weenee Brings GPS To Tunisia

Just a couple of days ago I was wondering when GPS would finally make it to Tunisia, and to my great surprise today, by accident, I came across a new website launched by Tunisia's first private mobile operator Tunisiana publicizing a new product they're launching called GPS Weenee. (Weenee in Arabic means: Where am I? or Where is it?) The product should be currently available at Tunisiana's service centers in the Grand Tunis area: Les Jardins du Lac, La Marsa (Zephyr), Ariana, Medina, Tunis-Carthage Airport. The details of the service are as follows: - Coverage: The Grand Tunis area and...

Aquaduct Mobile Filtration Vehicle

The results of the Innovate or Die competition, which challenged inventors to evaluate environmental issues and develop ingenious solutions surrounding climate change using pedal based machines, have recently been announced. Team Aquaduct was declared the winner out of 102 entries by utilizing the human ability to pedal to bring an easy and effective solution and lots of hope to people in the developing world who struggle daily to gather, transport, filter, and store clean drinking and cooking water. A peristaltic pump attached to the pedal crank draws water from a large tank, through a carbon filter, to a smaller clean...

Dutch MP To Release Film Insulting And Desecrating The Koran

The Dutch MP Geert Wilders who recently called for the Koran to be banned in the Netherlands, will soon be releasing a film on the internet which insults the Koran, and which is reported to show the Koran being torn up and otherwise desecrated. The extreme right wing politician has made the ten minute film promoting his belief that the Koran inspires people 'to do the worst things'. His views have inspired him to talk about a 'Tsunami of Islamisation' in Europe, for the Koran to be banned, and for Dutch Muslims to either give up their religion or leave...

Barack Obama Is Not A Muslim

Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama launched an online viral counteroffensive Tuesday against persistent e-mail chain letters that lie about his religious and political background. [...] There are various versions of the e-mails, but they generally insinuate that Obama is secretly a Muslim who attended a radical Islamic school in Indonesia. One of the e-mails charges that he's a radical Muslim who refuses to recite the Pledge of Allegiance. Another e-mail claims that he was sworn into the Senate using a copy of the Quran. All of the allegations are false. [Source: Wired] I don't even know what to say...

The Masks We Wear

Don't be fooled by me. Don't be fooled by the face I wear. For I wear a thousands masks, masks that I'm afraid to take off and none of them is me. Pretending is an art that is second nature with me, but don't be fooled. For God's sake don't be fooled. I give you the impression that I'm secure, that all is sunny and unruffled with me, within as well as without, that confidence is my name and coolness my game; that the water's calm and I'm in command, and that I need no one. Saudi Arabia To Lift Driving Ban On Women

Finally... Saudi Arabia is to lift the ban on women drivers in an attempt to stem a rising suffragette-style movement in the kingdom. Government officials have confirmed the landmark decision and plan to issue a decree by the end of the year. The move is designed to forestall protests for greater freedom by women, which have recently included campaigners driving cars through the kingdom in defiance of a threat of detention and loss of livelihoods. "There has been a decision to move on this by the Royal Court because it is recognised that if girls have been in schools since...

People Automatons

Today we come across an individual who behaves like an automaton, who does not know or understand himself, and the only person that he knows is the person that he is supposed to be, whose meaningless chatter has replaced communicative speech, whose synthetic smile has replaced genuine laughter, and whose sense of dull despair has taken the place of genuine pain. Two statements may be said concerning this individual. One is that he suffers from defects of spontaneity and individuality which may seem to be incurable. At the same time it may be said of him he does not differ...

Blue Ocean Strategy

Yesterday I finished reading "Blue Ocean Strategy (How to Create Uncontested Market Space and Make Competition Irrelevant)" by W. Chan Kim and Renée Mauborgne. The book explores the authors' vision of the kind of expanding, competitor-free markets that innovative companies can navigate. Unlike "red oceans," which are well explored and crowded with competitors, "blue oceans" represent "untapped market space" and the "opportunity for highly profitable growth. Using dozens of examples, from Southwest Airlines and the Cirque du Soleil to Curves and Starbucks, they present the approaches these companies took to open new doors for their businesses and reach out to...

The True Legacy Of George W. Bush

". . . as Bush basks in the glow of his own fantasy, the suffering in Gaza, one of the world’s worst humanitarian disasters, along with the savage occupation of Iraq, continues to fuel widespread anger and rage. . . . he has, with Israeli encouragement, isolated governments, even friendly governments, in the Middle East that raised feeble protests. Trading Places, Changing Perspectives

I just came across a really interesting post in which the writer puts himself in the others shoes, looking at the situation from another perspective, imagining how it would be if it happened to him and his country... Some highlights: It’s been eight years now. Eight long years. Sure, initially I was glad when China toppled the Bush regime and executed the “retarded tyrant” as I love to call him. It wasn’t that bad at the start, but as time wore on and I realized they weren’t leaving, it started to gnaw at me. [...] Initially, people seemed to accept...

Quality: You're sure there won't be a drop in quality whether you'r ethere or not. 3. Fresh Perspectives: These people will bring different experiences, skills, viewpoints and...

Questler, Where Minds Connect

Questler is a new online service that was launched into public beta a couple of months ago and which has an interesting social networking approach to learning online, finding answers to questions, and acquiring/sharing knowledge. The idea of the website stems from the belief that everyone is a learner, seeking more knowledge on certain topics, and that learning best occurs when individuals interact with each other in free spaces, informally, to share knowledge and collaboratively create ideas. So in other words, the goal is to try to tap into the collective knowledge of the crowd to acquire and share knowledge....

What Sarasvathy found was that these founders shared a distinct form of rationality that we have all long recognized intuitively as "Entrepreneurial". She termed this type of rationality "Effectual Reasoning". Here is a bit from her study that basically explains this "Effectual Reasoning": "Effectual reasoning […] does not begin with a specific goal. Instead, it begins with a...

You prefer to avoid the spotlight and just be a part of the gang 3. Every time you are called on to comment about the topic being discussed, you experience short-term memory loss 4.
