Britain Aims to Abolish Gasoline and Diesel Cars by 2040

Good to see some people are thinking of moving beyond petroleum...

As part of an admirable but highly optimistic plan for a "Zero-Carbon Britain" by the year 2050, British Liberal Democrats announced plans to completely abolish gasoline- and diesel-powered cars by 2040. To aid them in their quest, the politicians proposed increasing Britain's car tax by £2000 (or roughly $4000) for the least efficient sport-utility vehicles.

Nobody has yet mentioned the specifics of such a plan, except to note that it would mandate automakers to cease production (in Britain, at least) and importation of gasoline- or diesel-powered cars, in favor of alternative power sources, such as hydrogen or plug-in electric. Moreover, the scheme will call for huge government investment in the national rail system — funded, appropriately enough, by highway tolls.

It is a highly optimistic plan indeed, but if everyone believed in it and worked to get there, it's not impossible, and we'd surely get somewhere a lot better than where we are by 2040 and maybe even start seeing results earlier than that.

Good decision for the next generations. Concerning me and my self, I'm not sure if I still alive at that date, unfortunately !
