Tom Tancredo: Threaten to Bomb Muslim Holy Sites

So here are the thoughts of Tom Tancredo, one of the 2008 Republican US presidential candidates...

Colorado Rep. Tom Tancredo’s campaign stood by his assertion that bombing holy Muslim sites would serve as a good "deterrent" to prevent Islamic fundamentalists from attacking the United States.

"This shows that we mean business,” said Bay Buchanan, a senior Tancredo adviser. “There’s no more effective deterrent than that."

"If it is up to me, we are going to explain that an attack on this homeland of that nature would be followed by an attack on the holy sites in Mecca and Medina,” Tancredo said. “That is the only thing I can think of that might deter somebody from doing what they would otherwise do."

This isn't actually the first time I've heard someone suggesting something as mad and absurd as this; Fortunately most of the comments in reply to this piece of news show that even Americans think this is a bunch of crazy talk, and even more fortunate is the fact that there's no way this guy is going to become President, although the election and re-election of Bush sort of give it some probability.

I could go on and on about why this is a stupid, mad idea; but I think it's pretty obvious to almost everyone; and those who don't get why it's dumb and don't wonder how such a person is in public office probably won't get it anyway.

As I've noted before, you have your Crazies and we have ours. That the vast majority of their co-religionists and fellow nationals always quickly denounce their Crazies as Crazies gives one hope that sanity remains abroad in the world.
