The Alchemist – Paulo Coelho

Last night, I finished reading “The Alchemist” by Paulo Coelho. Ok, I know you can’t believe I only read it now, everyone already said that to me, and looked at me in that weird way as if I was living on Mars for the last few years. But well, I only got to read it now, and I totally loved it.

A friend of mine told me a few days ago when I started reading “The Alchemist” that it was the kind of book that would either change your life or change your conception of things. Well, he was right, it did both to me.

This is a really light yet important read, which is very well written and extremely inspirational. As I read in a review somewhere, this book is deceptively simple, yet its ideas are deep ones.

This book came to me in a crossroad in my life, and revived my will to pursue my dreams and bring them to reality. The book talks about our dreams, how the universe gives us omens all the time about how we should follow our dreams and conspires to help us realize them; this book was such an omen for me.

I realize now why everyone who reads this book falls in love with Paulo Coelho’s style and starts reading all his other books. His writing style is beautiful and smooth, and his ideas are clear and powerful.
I think I’ll be doing the same thing too.

My rating for this book would be: 9.5/10.

  1. I read the Alchimist one year ago and I Totally fall in love with Paulo Coelho , I read most of his other books after that ๐Ÿ™‚ I like his ability to talk to this child inside of me and to allow him to wish , to dream and to tell him it’s possible to achieve theses dreams. I never pay attention to this part of me before .
So welcome , you are becomming Paulo Coelho’s Fan ๐Ÿ™‚

  2. I do remember that was one of the fastest reads I went thru, it was going average along the way, till the very ending, which made me change my rating about the book.

I found the book to be as a wake up call for those who think that they are living by coincidence on this planet. It tackles the faith in Allah (God).

I do have one concern regarding your post, where you mentioned that “how the universe gives us omens”, the universe is a creation of Allah, and not a moving force on its own.

Just like how the footprints are an evidence of a person walking, the universe is an evidence of a mighty creator.

  3. Hello,
You are not the onlyone who reads The Alchimist these days… Me too ๐Ÿ˜‰ I have finished reading it last week and I didn’t like it at all…
Superficial, incoherent and stupidly mistic this book was a big waste of time I think…

  4. Elyssa, I totally agree with you, this book talks to the dreamer in every one of us, that child that had high hopes and big dreams, that child we forgot. This book empowers that child and brings those dreams back. That’s what I loved about it.

Karim, I agree that it’s a masterpiece and that it moves a lot of things inside. I feel hope in making my dreams come true again.

Saqf, I liked the book from the moment the boy met the old king. The king’s words got me thinking a lot and really stirred me.
I agree with you that this book tackles the issue of faith in God in a really nice way.
As for what I said, well I was mainly quoting it the way it was said in the book, anyway, of course the universe is but a creation of God, through which he shows his majesty and might.

Supcomian boy, I guess everyone has their way of looking at things and interpreting them. Sometimes something that touches one person deeply might pass unnoticed for another person. I guess it’s only normal.
Again, when it comes to me, this book made me think a lot about myself, my life and my dreams.

  5. nice book !
    i totally enjoyed it

Coelho has a particular way to simplify complexe ideas and to explain them with a very simple sentences … and this isn’t only in The Alchemist but also in all his books …

he’s talk so easily that every one can feel the real meaning of the ideas …

Nice book … about ambitions, self-estime and choices !

  6. I still have this book in my bookcase and didn’t have the time to take a look and start it ! each time I wana read it and find myself chose another one !!! …

And yet alot of my friend also told me to read it .. seems that am the one who are from Mars !

By the way … nice style you have I liked it ๐Ÿ™‚

  7. Tom, yeah, I love the way he takes ideas and simplifies them in a really nice way.
Which other book of his would you recommend I read next?

Life Silent, well don’t wait much longer, get the book and read it now.
It shouldn’t take you too long to get through it, and you won’t regret it at all.

  8. Indeed, Coelho is especially good at showing us things that really matter in life, things so simple that we tend to forget them.
In that vein, you should try reading E.E. Schmitt books, like ‘M. Ibrahim et les fleurs du Coran’. Dunno if they’re translated in english, but as a tunisian, I guess you understand french.

  9. i read it yesterday and i really like it anyway paulo coelho had the power to change people… “THE ALCHEMIST”

  10. I read The Alchamist about 8 months ago – I now have all of Paulo’s books that are available in the english language and I cant get enough of them. How anyone can be so truly inspirational amazes me and I thank God for him. I’ve waited so many years to read books that inspire and give you hope to achieve…..

  11. I am in the middle of readin the book “The Alchemist”, It’s like a fable, at first I thought it was very boring book, but then I realized then.. that It was an inspirational book that teaches you many life lessons. To follow your dreams and to listen to your heart and that everything is it your heart but some people don’t know that. You don’t always have to go in a long journey to find the answers to many Q’s when its within your heart, if you really listen. Bring your dream into reality. I also learn that when you really want something you can always accomplish it and that it is possible. To follow your dream and reach it is better than to not follow your dreams and always wonder.

I am loooking forward in finishing the book and write a summary about it. It clearly is one of the best book I have read (even though i didnt finish yet lol). And is soo deep and gives you many messages that you should learn to understand. Overall awesome book :]].

  12. This book help me a lot in the hardest moments of my life. It’s amazing book and inspired u to follow your dreams.

  13. Luckily, THE ALCHEMIST became a part of my o’levels syllabus and i got the privelage to read it. Believe me when i first read the name i was like “wht the hell?” but as soon as i went on further reading that book i gradually fell in love with paulo’s style of writing….its so smooth, beautiful and in its own way passionate! He writes about simple topics but those who read with interest can easily grasp the hidden messages inside it for mankind! i recommend this book for everyone…not only kids but even a forty-year old man can read it n i assure u that he will never feel bored but will enjoy the secrets of life! LURVEEEEE U PPL….ENJOY LYF!

  14. It’s a sweet story — While there are some charming and encouraging ideas — The Magical Mystery Tour component leaves one longing for majic carpets, philosopher’s stone, Samanthas majical powers, Merlin’s Sight, Santa Clause, the Easter Bunny and the Tooth Fairy…

Just think Happy Thoughts and you too can fly! Just like Tinkerbell! (However, I suggest vertical takeoff as opposed to jumping off a building….)

  15. the alchemist changed my whole life especially that i was on a crossroad n i was wondering if i should choose what i have always dreamed of …this book gave me the right answer and all the answeres i wanted to hear !it gave me confident in my choice..and here i am on the way on making my dream come true!i love u Paulo Coelho…10x for every single word 10x for helping me 10x for the hope u gave me 10x for the faith n strenght u put in my heart !!!!!!!!
