Tunisian Author Mohamed Laroussi Metoui Dies at 85
Mohamed Laroussi Metoui, one of Tunisia's most prominent literary and cultural figures, died Monday at the age of 85.
A prolific author of novels, poems and short stories, he was particularly known for his novels "Halima" and "Al Tout Al Morr".
Mohamed Laroussi Metoui was also the founder of the Tunisian union of writers as well as of the union of writers of the Arab Maghreb. He also founded and directed the literary review “Qissas”(Novels) .
Apart from his literary activities, Laroussi Metoui also served as a diplomat and representative in Tunisia’s chamber of representatives. He was awarded several medals and prizes such as the insignia of the Grand Cordon for cultural merit in 1991, the national award for literature and human sciences in 1989, and the Novembre 7 award for literary creation in 2003.
I read his novel "Al Tout Al Morr" (The Bitter Berries), some years ago, and I remember really liking it, especially his style of writing. I think I actually have 2 copies of it somewhere, one I got from my cousin and one I was given as a gift on some occasion.
May God rest his soul in peace.
