Adobe To Acquire Macromedia

Adobe Systems Incorporated has announced a definitive agreement to acquire Macromedia in an all-stock transaction valued at approximately $3.4 billion.

They say:

Through the combination of our powerful development, authoring and collaboration tools – and the complementary functionality of PDF and Flash – we have the opportunity to drive an industry-defining technology platform that delivers compelling, rich content and applications across a wide range of devices and operating systems.

Well, I don't know what to think of this really.

I mean when you think of it on the design, web publishing, online documents and e-learning level, this could be great news. Adobe and Macromedia complement each other very well with their product portfolios, with each company being stronger in certain areas.
If they make the right choices in how to build up their new united product portfolio in a way that would give us the best of both worlds, this will be a perfect marriage.

I'm also a bit concerned about other Macromedia products like the JRun and ColdFusion application servers that it inherited from Allaire and continued to grow and build.
I'm not too sure if Adobe is that interested in these products even though they are good solid products that fit quite well in the web publishing arena.

In the end it remains to be seen how all this plays out, what products remain and which are killed. Those decisions could make this the greatest merger ever just like they could make it the worst.

I would say that would blow off our minds with this new merging that's for sure.
